BuildCalcWorks is an online utility platform intended to help you plan and estimate projects. Every result comes from what you put in and the assumptions in use: the dimensions you enter, the units you select, the formula behind the tool, configurable reference values such as material densities and product yields, any waste allowance you set, and any prices you type.

Results should be treated as planning estimates rather than guaranteed project quantities.

BuildCalcWorks aims to provide useful and mathematically consistent estimates, but actual material requirements may vary. Common reasons include:

• inaccurate measurements, or rounding at each step
• uneven surfaces, over-excavation and subgrade variation
• compaction, settlement and moisture
• material variation, cutting waste and damaged pieces
• supplier tolerances and product-specific yield
• construction method, site access and local practice

We do not guarantee that a result matches what your project will actually consume.

A calculator is only as accurate as what goes into it. Please check your dimensions, units, quantities, prices, waste allowance, material selection and density values before relying on a result. We cannot verify physical measurements taken on your site, and a wrong unit or a mistyped digit changes the answer completely.

Check important quantities independently before buying concrete, ordering gravel, buying lumber, ordering roofing or flooring, hiring contractors, or committing to significant project costs.

Compare the estimate against:

• supplier information and quotes
• manufacturer documentation and product data sheets
• your project drawings and specifications
• actual measurements taken on site
• qualified professional guidance where the work calls for it

BuildCalcWorks calculators and written information are not a substitute for qualified professional advice. We do not provide structural engineering, architectural services, legal advice, surveying, geotechnical engineering, electrical or HVAC engineering, code-compliance certification, or construction supervision.

Nothing here determines whether a project is:

• structurally safe or properly engineered
• suitable for a specific site
• compliant with building codes, permits or inspections
• properly reinforced or properly founded
• correctly sized for the loads it will carry

Calculator outputs are generated automatically from your values and the formula. Automatic generation does not mean a result has been reviewed by an engineer, architect, contractor or inspector — no such review takes place, and we make no claim of professional approval or certification.

Calculators involving footings, piers, post holes, foundations, decks, beams, framing and roofing estimate quantities from the dimensions you enter. They do not tell you whether those dimensions are structurally appropriate.

For example, the Concrete Footing Calculator works out how much concrete a footing of the dimensions you entered will take. It does not determine the required footing width or depth, soil-bearing capacity, reinforcement, or structural load capacity. The same limit applies to every structural-adjacent tool on the site, now and in the future.

We also do not determine frost depth. Post-hole and footing calculators must not be read as guidance on how deep to dig for frost; that comes from your local requirements or your design. If a future tool ever uses verified location-specific data, it will say so explicitly.

Concrete quantities vary with excavation and form dimensions, uneven subgrade, over-excavation, spills, the mix used, and placement conditions. Ordering a small margin over a calculated volume is common practice, but how much is a judgement for your project.

Bag calculations are approximate. Yield differs between products and package sizes, and two bags of the same stated weight can produce different volumes. Always check the yield printed on the product you are actually buying; where our calculator lets you enter that yield, use the product's own figure.

Volume comes from your dimensions; weight comes from density, and density is not a constant. It varies with stone type, gradation, moisture, compaction, void space and supplier.

Reference densities in our calculators are planning references only, shown on screen so you can see what the weight is based on, and editable. Where your supplier states a density for the material they are delivering, use theirs.

Loose volume and compacted volume are not the same, and the difference varies by material — gravel, road base, soil and sand all behave differently. There is no single compaction factor that is correct for everything, and we do not apply one automatically.

Where a calculator offers a compaction adjustment, it is optional, off by default, and applies exactly the percentage you choose. The result therefore depends on your value, not on an assumption of ours.

Optional waste or extra-material allowances are planning tools. Values such as 5%, 10% or 15% are convenient starting points, not requirements, and no allowance is universally correct. How much extra a project needs depends on cutting patterns, layout, material, site conditions and how much surplus you can accept.

Cost results are built from quantity multiplied by a unit price, plus whatever optional labour, delivery, tax or contingency figures you enter — and, in some tools, from broad reference price ranges.

Actual prices differ with location, supplier, contractor, season, market conditions, product quality, availability, delivery, tax and project complexity.

Cost estimates are not quotes, bids, offers or guarantees.

Quick estimates and reference ranges

Where a calculator offers a quick estimate from reference price ranges, that is general planning guidance only. A detailed estimate using your own local prices is more relevant to your project, but it is still an estimate.

Labour

Labour prices vary substantially by contractor, location, difficulty, access, site conditions and scope. We cannot guarantee labour rates; only a quote from the person doing the work can tell you what it costs.

Calculators may use reference values for concrete density, aggregate density, product coverage, bag yield, board dimensions and material thickness. These differ between manufacturers, products and batches.

When a manufacturer or supplier gives you a specific value, prefer it over a generic reference. Our reference values exist so a calculation can start somewhere, not to override the product in front of you.

Many building products, lumber especially, are sold by a nominal size that differs from the finished measured size. A board sold as six inches wide is usually narrower than that.

Where accuracy matters, enter actual measured dimensions rather than nominal ones, and do not assume the two are the same. Calculators that ask for an actual dimension say so on the field.

Construction requirements differ by country, state or province, municipality, climate zone, site and project type. BuildCalcWorks does not guarantee that any output satisfies building codes, zoning rules, permit conditions, inspections, fire requirements or accessibility requirements.

Checking what applies where you are building — and obtaining any permits needed — is your responsibility, and is best done before you order materials.

No electrical, HVAC or solar calculators are published on BuildCalcWorks today. This section sets out the limits that will apply if such tools are added later.

• Electrical: any electrical calculator would provide mathematical conversions or estimates only. It would not replace assessment by a licensed electrician, electrical design, code compliance or equipment manufacturer instructions. Electrical work is regulated in most places, and should be carried out by someone qualified to do it.
• HVAC: planning figures such as room volume or rough heating and cooling estimates do not replace a professional load calculation. Real system sizing depends on insulation, windows, climate, occupancy, air leakage and how the building is constructed.
• Solar and energy: estimates would depend on location, weather, electricity prices, roof orientation, shading, equipment efficiency and utility rules. We would not guarantee energy production or savings.

Similarly, no artificial-intelligence feature is active on the site. If one is added later to help describe a project or explain a result, the deterministic calculation engines will remain the source of the numbers, and generated explanatory text can contain errors.

Roofing calculators estimate area, roofing squares and material quantities. They do not evaluate the structural condition of a roof, its load capacity, safe access, or whether an installation can be carried out safely.

Roof work carries a real risk of falling. A quantity estimate says nothing about whether it is safe for you to be up there.

Construction and DIY work can involve hazards: heavy materials, excavation and trench collapse, power tools, ladders, roof work, electrical systems, wet concrete and machinery.

BuildCalcWorks does not supervise your work and cannot assess your site. Follow the product and equipment instructions, use appropriate safety procedures and protective equipment, and comply with the regulations that apply to you. Where work is beyond your experience, bring in someone qualified.

Weight estimates must not be used as confirmation that a specific vehicle, trailer, structure or lifting device can safely carry the load.

A total bag weight or a tonnage figure is an estimate of material, not a loading assessment. Check the manufacturer-rated limits of whatever will carry, lift or support the material, and the legal limits that apply to transport where you are.

Truck capacity varies by vehicle and supplier. Where a calculator estimates truckloads, it divides by the capacity you or your supplier provide; it does not know what any particular truck can legally carry. A truckload estimate is not a transport authorisation or a loading recommendation.

Our content may refer to information from manufacturers, suppliers, public sources and industry references. Such information changes. We make reasonable efforts to keep important reference data current, but we cannot guarantee that every external value stays current indefinitely.

Where a calculator assumption is based on manufacturer information, confirm the current product documentation before buying or using the product: yield, coverage, density, packaging and specifications can all change.

Product links are provided for convenience and should not be treated as project-specific professional recommendations. No product is guaranteed suitable for your project.

BuildCalcWorks may display third-party advertising to help keep the calculators free. Advertising is not active yet: the ad areas on calculator pages are placeholders, and no ad is being served.

When advertising does run, it will be labelled and kept separate from calculator results. Advertisers have no influence over our formulas, assumptions or results; an advertised product is not endorsed or recommended by us; and you are never asked or encouraged to click an advertisement.

Advertising and product recommendations are two different things. Advertising inventory is selected by an advertising provider, while any product links we show ourselves may earn a commission. Neither affects the mathematics.

We may link to third-party websites. We do not control their content, privacy practices, terms, prices, availability or security, and we are not responsible for them. Review those sites independently before relying on them or providing information to them.

BuildCalcWorks aims to provide accurate and useful calculations, but we do not guarantee that every calculator, reference value or result will be error-free, complete or suitable for every project.

Software bugs, browser differences, updates and data-entry problems can all affect output. We also cannot guarantee uninterrupted availability of the site.

If a result looks wrong, a calculator is broken, a reference value is out of date, or something displays badly, please tell us. Mentioning the calculator, the values you entered and what you expected is usually enough for us to reproduce it.

A dedicated contact address is being published alongside our legal details. Until then, please use the contact details on our About page. We investigate reports and correct genuine errors, though we cannot promise that every issue is fixed immediately.

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, BuildCalcWorks is not liable for indirect or consequential losses resulting solely from reasonable reliance on planning estimates provided by this website — for example, buying excess material, buying too little, a difference between an estimate and what a supplier delivers, a budget difference, or a delay arising from an estimate difference.

This does not apply to intentional wrongdoing, to gross negligence where the law does not permit exclusion, or to personal injury or death where exclusion is prohibited.

Nothing in this Disclaimer excludes or limits liability or consumer rights that cannot lawfully be excluded or limited.
