Flooring cost estimate

Ready when you are

Quick Estimate gives a dated U.S. reference range from floor area and flooring type. Detailed Estimate itemizes your project from your own quantities and prices.

How Much Does New Flooring Cost?

Flooring cost depends on:

  • Floor area
  • Material type
  • Material price
  • Labor
  • Old-floor removal
  • Subfloor condition
  • Underlayment
  • Trim
  • Project complexity

Reference ranges are useful for early budgeting, but detailed estimates should use actual local quotes and product prices. To work out quantities first, use the Flooring Calculator or the material-specific Laminate, Vinyl Plank, Hardwood, Tile and Carpet calculators, then bring those quantities into the Detailed Estimate.

Flooring Cost per Square Foot

Current U.S. 2026 references show broad installed flooring often falls around $4–$15 per ft² overall, but material-specific projects can fall below or above that range.

United States — 2026 reference only (USD, last reviewed September 2026).

Flooring Cost by Material

Carpet, laminate, vinyl plank, hardwood, engineered wood and tile have different material and installation cost structures, so there is no single universal rate. The Quick Estimate uses these dated U.S. reference ranges per ft²:

FlooringMaterialInstalled
Carpet$1–$5$2–$8
Laminate$1–$6$4–$14
Vinyl Plank / LVP$2–$10$4–$16
Hardwood$4–$15$11–$25
Engineered Wood$2–$9$7–$20
Tile$2–$30$10–$50

Flooring Labor Cost

Labor varies by flooring system, local market, installation complexity, room geometry, stairs and subfloor condition. Current broad U.S. reference labor is around $2–$8 per ft², but the Detailed Estimate relies on your actual rate or quote. A DIY option sets labor to zero without hiding tool, equipment or custom costs.

Old Flooring Removal Cost

Removal cost varies by the existing material, adhesives, disposal, access and local labor. No single universal removal rate is applied — you enter a per-area rate or a fixed cost, and disposal or hauling is a separate line.

Subfloor Preparation and Repair

Subfloor work can materially change flooring cost. Preparation may include leveling, patching, repair or replacement. BuildCalcWorks only calculates cost from the quantities and rates you enter — it never decides what preparation your floor needs.

Material Cost vs. Installed Cost

Material price alone does not represent total project cost. Installed cost can include:

  • Labor
  • Removal
  • Preparation
  • Underlayment
  • Trim
  • Delivery
  • Taxes

In the Detailed Estimate, material is always priced on the purchase quantity — cartons, boxes, bundles, purchased coverage or carpet roll length — rather than the net floor area. Cost per ft² and per m² is then the total divided by the net floor area. Any enabled item without a price is shown as “Not priced” and the result is marked as a Partial Estimate.
