Shingle takeoff

Input method

1 roofing square = 100 sq ft of roof area (the NRCA definition). A roofing square is not the same thing as one bundle.

For a symmetrical gable roof, both slopes together project onto the whole building footprint, so the footprint is multiplied by the pitch multiplier once — never doubled.

Horizontal plan dimensions. Roof slope is added by the pitch setting — the same shared roof engine used by the Roof Square Footage Calculator.

Use overhang only if your length and width are wall/building dimensions rather than roof-edge dimensions.

Roof pitch
: 12

Decimal pitches such as 4.5 : 12 are supported. Enter one form and the others are derived.

Measurement shortcuts only. The calculator uses the pitch you enter. Roof pitch depends on design, roofing material, climate, code and the existing structure, so BuildCalcWorks does not recommend a pitch.

Extra material may help account for cuts, hips, valleys, starter areas and complex roof geometry. Actual waste depends on the roof and product, so the allowance stays your choice.

Shingle coverage

Many standard asphalt shingles use about 3 bundles per square, but specialty products can differ — some use 4 or 5. Check the manufacturer's product specifications.

Length and width are the horizontal footprint; slope is added by the pitch setting. Schematic — not to scale.

For best accuracy, use the exact coverage information printed on the shingle, starter, ridge-cap and underlayment products you plan to purchase.

How Many Shingles Do I Need?

  1. 1Calculate the actual roof area from roof dimensions and pitch, or enter the area or roofing squares you already have.
  2. 2Add the waste / extra material allowance you want to plan for.
  3. 3Convert the planning area to roofing squares: Planning Squares = Planning Area ÷ 100 sq ft.
  4. 4Use the bundle coverage of the shingle product you plan to buy.
  5. 5Bundles = Planning Squares × Bundles per Square, rounded up — or Planning Area ÷ Coverage per Bundle, rounded up.

1,500 sq ft roof area + 10% = 1,650 sq ft planning area

1,650 ÷ 100 = 16.5 planning squares

16.5 × 3 bundles per square = 49.5 → 50 bundles

Bundles are whole packages, so quantities are always rounded up.

How Many Bundles of Shingles Are in a Square?

Many common asphalt shingles — including standard 3-tab and many architectural products — use 3 bundles per square. That is a common case, not a universal rule.

Manufacturer guidance notes that some specialty and heavier products use four or five bundles per square. Always verify the bundles per square, or the square feet per bundle, on the product specification before ordering.

That is why this calculator offers both methods: bundles per square for the common case, and coverage per bundle when you know the product's exact coverage.

What Is a Roofing Square?

One roofing square equals 100 square feet of roof area — the standard NRCA definition used across the roofing trade.

Roofing Squares = Roof Area (sq ft) ÷ 100

1,650 sq ft ÷ 100 = 16.5 squares

A square is a unit of area. A bundle is packaging. They are not the same thing, and the number of bundles in a square depends entirely on the product.

Need to Calculate Roof Area?

If you do not know your roof square footage, calculate it from roof dimensions and pitch first, then bring the area back here.

Roof Square Footage Calculator

Both calculators call the same shared roof geometry engine, so the actual roof area and roofing squares match exactly.

Need Drip Edge, Ice & Water or Tear-Off?

The Roofing Calculator adds drip edge, ice & water barrier, tear-off coverage and a full material cost breakdown on top of this shingle takeoff, and it keeps the values you already entered.

Build full roofing estimate

Starter Strip

Starter shingles or starter material are installed at selected roof edges according to the roofing system being used. This calculator lets you choose eaves, rakes, or both — it does not assume a configuration.

Starter Length = Selected Eave Length + Selected Rake Length

Starter Bundles = Starter Length ÷ Coverage per Bundle (rounded up)

120 ft eaves ÷ 100 ft per bundle = 1.2 → 2 bundles

Coverage varies by product: published starter products list figures such as roughly 100 and 116 linear feet per bundle, which is exactly why product-specific coverage should be entered rather than assumed. Follow the shingle manufacturer's installation instructions for where and how starter is used.

Hip and Ridge Cap Shingles

Hip and ridge-cap bundles are measured by linear coverage, not by roof square area.

Total Length = Ridge Length + Hip Length

Ridge Cap Bundles = Total Length ÷ Coverage per Bundle (rounded up)

(40 ft + 60 ft) ÷ 25 ft per bundle = 4 bundles

Published hip/ridge coverage commonly falls somewhere around 20 to 33 linear feet per bundle depending on the product and exposure, and individual products differ. Check the manufacturer's specification for the cap product you are buying.

Roofing Underlayment

Underlayment is estimated from roof area and the product's coverage per roll.

Underlayment Area = Roof Area × (1 + Allowance)

Rolls = Underlayment Area ÷ Coverage per Roll (rounded up)

1,500 × 1.10 = 1,650 sq ft ÷ 400 = 4.125 → 5 rolls

Overlaps and installation requirements reduce effective coverage, so an overlap allowance is available separately from the shingle allowance. This calculator does not prescribe an underlayment type.

Shingle Waste and Extra Material

Extra material may be needed for several reasons:

  • Hips
  • Valleys
  • Dormers
  • Starter areas
  • Cuts
  • Damaged shingles
  • Layout and alignment

Manufacturer estimating guidance often references roughly 10–15% extra for shingle waste and roof complexity, and BuildCalcWorks keeps that a choice rather than a requirement. No single percentage is always correct, so the allowance stays yours to select.

Complex roofs with hips, valleys, dormers or multiple pitches can require more cutting and therefore more material. The calculator does not decide complexity waste for you.

Why Product Coverage Matters

A "bundle" is packaging, not a fixed universal coverage unit. Different products have different:

  • shingles per bundle
  • bundles per square
  • square feet per bundle

Manufacturers explicitly recommend checking each shingle package or specification because bundle coverage varies. For best accuracy, use the exact coverage information printed on the shingle, starter, ridge-cap and underlayment products you plan to purchase.

Roof Safety

Roof work and direct roof measurement can involve fall hazards. Use plans, safe measurement methods, or qualified professionals where appropriate.

Roof measurement and roofing work can involve serious fall hazards. Use plans, safe measurement methods, aerial measurements or qualified professionals where appropriate.

This calculator estimates material quantities. It does not assess structural adequacy, decking condition, ventilation requirements, code compliance, repair suitability, safe roof access, or whether shingles are the right roofing system for a building.
