Fence cost depends on the fence length, the material, the height, the number of gates, whether you are paying for installation, the terrain and site work involved, and whether an existing fence has to be removed first. Published consumer cost guides for 2026 show very wide installed ranges — roughly $6 to $85 per linear foot across materials — because a short chain-link run and a tall composite privacy fence are not comparable projects.

That is why this calculator offers two paths: a Quick Estimate that uses configurable reference ranges for planning, and a Detailed Estimate that prices the real material quantities from the Fence Calculator engine using the prices you enter.

Quick Estimate uses a reference range per linear foot:

• Low = Fence Length × Low Cost Per Linear Foot
• High = Fence Length × High Cost Per Linear Foot
• Optional gate costs, removal, fees and contingency are added afterwards

Detailed Estimate builds the total from the quantities returned by the shared fence engine:

• Material category = Quantity × Your Price (posts, rails, pickets or panels, concrete bags, gates)
• Labor = Fence Length × Labor Rate, or your fixed quote
• Subtotal = Materials + Labor + Removal + Delivery + Site Preparation + Fees
• Contingency = Subtotal × Contingency %
• Tax = (Subtotal + Contingency) × Tax %
• Cost Per Linear Foot = Project Total ÷ Fence Length

Picket and rail quantities already include the waste allowance you selected, so no second waste percentage is applied on top of them.

Installed costs vary far more than most single averages suggest. Consumer guides for 2026 place typical installed fencing anywhere from about $6 to $85 per linear foot, with chain-link at the lower end and decorative metal or tall composite systems at the upper end. Height, material grade, gate count, terrain, site access, removal of an existing fence and your local labor market all move the figure.

The reference ranges in the Quick Estimate are stored as editable configuration and are clearly labelled as planning references. They are not local quotes and they are not live supplier pricing.

Wood, vinyl, chain-link, aluminum, composite and decorative metal differ in both material cost and the labor needed to install them. Panel systems install differently from board-by-board fencing, and heavier decorative metal often needs more substantial posts and setting. No material is universally the best choice — the right one depends on the look, maintenance and budget you want.

A gate is more than a gap in the fence. It adds a purchased or built gate unit, hinge and latch hardware, usually two dedicated posts, and extra installation work to hang and align it. Gates are kept as their own cost category so a wide double gate is not averaged into the per-foot fence price. Automated driveway gates are outside the scope of this calculator.

Removing an old fence is a separate budget item: demolition, pulling posts and concrete footings, hauling and disposal, and cleaning up the line before the new fence goes in. You can price it per linear foot of existing fence or as a fixed amount, and it is never added automatically.
