Footing measurements

Footing type

Enter the actual footing dimensions specified for your project.

Use this when several separate runs share the same dimensions.

When calculating multiple connected footing runs, avoid counting overlapping corner sections twice.

Extra material can help account for spills, uneven subgrade and measurement variation.

Length · 20 ftWidth · 24 inDepth · 10 in
Length runs along the footing; width and depth describe its cross-section.

Footing estimate

Ready when you are

Choose a footing type, enter the dimensions from your project and select Calculate to see volume per footing, total concrete, bag quantities and your recommended order.

BuildCalcWorks estimates concrete quantity from dimensions you provide. Footing dimensions and reinforcement should be determined from applicable plans, codes or qualified professional guidance.

How Much Concrete Do I Need for a Footing?

Footing concrete volume is calculated from Length × Width × Depth. For several identical footings, multiply the volume of one footing by the quantity. The result is then converted to cubic yards or cubic meters, and your selected waste allowance is applied separately to the recommended order.

How to Use the Concrete Footing Calculator

  1. 1Choose Continuous / Strip or Rectangular Pad.
  2. 2Enter the footing length, width and depth with their units.
  3. 3Enter the number of identical footings, or switch to a total combined length.
  4. 4Choose a waste allowance.
  5. 5Optionally enter your local concrete price.
  6. 6Select Calculate.
  7. 7Review the volume, weight and bag quantities.

How the Calculation Works

Volume = Length × Width × Depth. Every measurement is normalized before multiplying, so you can freely mix feet, inches, meters and centimeters.

20 ft long × 24 in wide × 10 in deep

24 ÷ 12 = 2 ft

10 ÷ 12 ≈ 0.8333 ft

20 × 2 × 0.8333 ≈ 33.33 ft³

33.33 ÷ 27 ≈ 1.23 yd³

Strip Footing vs. Pad Footing

Continuous / Strip Footing — a long rectangular concrete footing running beneath a wall or similar continuous structural element.

Rectangular Pad Footing — an isolated rectangular concrete footing used beneath individual supports or columns.

These descriptions are informational. Which footing type, size and reinforcement a project needs is determined by plans, codes and qualified professional guidance — not by this calculator.

Why Width and Depth Matter

Increasing either footing width or depth increases concrete volume proportionally. If depth changes from 8 inches to 12 inches while everything else stays the same, 12 ÷ 8 = 1.5, so the concrete volume increases by 50%.

This is a mathematical explanation only. It does not imply that 8 or 12 inches is an appropriate dimension for any project.

Common Footing Measurement Mistakes

  • Mixing inches and feet in the same measurement.
  • Forgetting to multiply by the number of identical footings.
  • Double-counting overlapping corners in connected footing runs.
  • Using excavation dimensions instead of the intended concrete dimensions.
  • Forgetting that the actual excavation can vary from the planned dimensions.
