Deck project cost

Estimate type

Quick Estimate returns a broad planning range from deck size and decking material, using dated reference ranges.

Measurement system

Your entered measurements are kept — only the display and per-unit pricing units change.

Deck size from

Material selection changes reference cost ranges and project context only. It is never a suitability, durability or structural recommendation.

New structure: framing, footings, decking and finishing. Deck type is planning context for reference selection only — it never infers framing, height or structural requirements.

This calculator estimates project costs from quantities, dimensions and prices. It does not determine structural member sizes, allowable spans, post spacing, footing dimensions or code compliance.

Deck cost estimate

Quick Estimate gives a broad planning range from deck size and material. Detailed Estimate builds a full budget from your deck quantities and local prices.

Quick Estimate uses broad, dated reference ranges for early budgeting only. Local contractor quotes may differ substantially.

How Much Does a Deck Cost to Build?

Deck cost depends on the deck size, the decking material, the framing and footings underneath it, railing, stairs, labor, removal of an old deck, site work, permits, delivery and finishing. There is no single price that applies to every deck.

As a 2026 U.S. planning reference, HomeGuide currently reports a basic new deck around $25$50 per square foot installed, deck replacement around $30$55 per square foot, and composite decking around $40$80 per square foot installed, with materials around $16$32 and labor around $24$48 per square foot.

Reference market: United States. Reference year: 2026. Reference ranges are labelled with their market and year. They are not converted into other countries' prices, because currency conversion is not localization.

Quick Estimate vs. Detailed Estimate

The two modes answer the same question in different ways, and they are never mixed.

Quick Estimate multiplies your deck area by a reviewed installed cost range per unit area and adds any railing or stair allowance you enter. It returns a deliberately broad range such as $8,000–$14,000 rather than a falsely precise figure.

Detailed Estimate builds the budget from the actual quantities produced by the Decking Calculator — the same Deck Material Calculator engine — priced entirely with the supplier and contractor figures you enter.

Deck Materials and Framing Cost

Detailed Estimate prices the takeoff categories the Deck Material Calculator already produces: decking boards, joists, rim and band boards, beams, posts, footing concrete, fascia and fasteners. Quantities are never recalculated here — this page is a pricing layer over the shared deck and concrete engines.

Each category can be priced per piece, per linear unit or per unit area depending on how your supplier quotes it. A category with a quantity but no price is reported as “Not priced” rather than counted as free, and the estimate is labelled partial.

Footing and concrete quantities come from the Decking Calculator and the shared concrete engines. This page only prices those quantities — it never determines footing size, footing depth or how many footings a deck structurally requires.

Deck Labor Cost

Labor can be excluded for a DIY build, entered per square foot, per square meter, or as a fixed quote. Nothing is applied automatically.

For context only: 2026 U.S. guides report deck labor commonly around $11–$25 per sq ft, and Angi's decking-material guide currently cites professional labor around $15–$35 per sq ft. These broad U.S. references are never applied automatically — Detailed Estimate uses your entered rate.

Removing an Old Deck

Removal, hauling, disposal and cleanup are priced separately here, so replacement costs are never hidden inside labor. Demolition scope selections are summary context and do not change a price by themselves.

Enter a fixed disposal amount, or mark disposal as included in your removal price. Dumpster size and waste weight are not estimated.

Railing and Stairs

Railing cost varies greatly by material — wood, vinyl, composite, metal, cable and glass differ substantially — so BuildCalcWorks asks for your own price per linear unit or a fixed quote instead of applying one universal figure.

Stairs are included as an allowance or quote you enter. Stair geometry, riser counts and stair requirements are not calculated here.

Permits, Delivery and Site Work

Permit requirements and fees vary by jurisdiction and project. BuildCalcWorks does not determine whether a permit is required. Angi 2026 reports permit fees commonly around $230–$500, but local fees vary widely — this is explanatory context only, never a default.

Site preparation, delivery, equipment rental and finishing are all user-entered fixed amounts, so nothing enters your budget that you did not choose to include.

For context only: HomeGuide currently places deck staining around $1.50–$4.00 per sq ft and professional deck painting around $2–$5 per sq ft for typical projects. Nothing is priced automatically, and finishing is never enabled for composite or PVC by default.

Contingency, Tax and Cost Per Square Foot

An optional contingency of 0–15% is applied to the project subtotal before tax. Optional tax is applied either to materials only or to the whole subtotal, using the rate you enter.

Cost per square foot and cost per square meter are calculated from your measured deck area, not from a reference table.

This Calculator Does Not Size Your Deck Structure

This calculator estimates project costs from quantities, dimensions and prices. It does not determine structural member sizes, allowable spans, post spacing, footing dimensions or code compliance.

Enter member sizes, spacing, post layout and footing dimensions from your own plans, the manufacturer's current installation documentation, applicable local requirements and qualified professional guidance where appropriate.
