Deck Board Calculator

The number of deck boards depends on four things: the area the boards have to cover, the actual face width of the board, the gap you leave between boards, and the stock length you can buy. Enter those and the calculator returns the board rows, the linear decking required, the stock boards to buy and a waste-adjusted quantity.

Rows must cover the width across the boards, including the gaps between them. There is always one fewer gap than there are boards, so the row count is:

Rows = ceil((Coverage Width + Gap) ÷ (Board Width + Gap))

Dividing the coverage width by the board width alone ignores the gaps and under-counts the rows. For example, a 12 ft (144 in) coverage width with 5.5 in boards and a 0.25 in gap has an effective row pitch of 5.75 in and needs 26 rows.

Use the actual face width of the decking board, not only its nominal lumber size.

A board sold as a 2×6 is not 6 in wide, and a 5/4×6 deck board is commonly around 5.5 in. Measure a board or read the product's listed actual dimensions, then enter that figure — using the nominal size inflates the coverage per row and under-counts the boards.

Yes. The gap is part of the effective row pitch, so a wider gap means fewer rows across the same deck. Enter the board spacing specified for the decking product and installation conditions. Manufacturer instructions should be followed.

It changes the row count and the board run. Boards running along the deck length are cut to the length and cover the width, so the coverage width is the deck width. Boards running along the width do the opposite, and a long, narrow deck can need a very different number of rows and a very different amount of linear decking in each direction.

If the stock length reaches across the whole board run, each row takes one board. If it does not, the estimate uses a conservative row-by-row count: each row uses whole boards, so a 20 ft run with 12 ft boards takes two boards per row.

Stock Layout Estimate: a conservative board count with one row at a time and no offcut reuse. Actual board optimization may reduce or alter the quantity.

Advanced Options include an idealised offcut-reuse estimate, which divides the total linear decking by the stock length instead. It is off by default and labelled, because usable offcuts, blocking and seam positions decide whether that quantity is achievable. Available lengths also vary by product and supplier, so enter a length you can actually buy.

Waste allowances are your choice, not a requirement. Cuts, board direction, deck geometry, defects, picture framing, diagonal layouts and stock lengths all affect how much extra material a job needs.

The calculator starts at 10% because it is a common planning figure, not a requirement. Both the base quantity and the waste-adjusted recommended quantity are always shown so you can see exactly what the allowance added.

Approximate angled-layout estimate. Angled layouts create additional cuts and offcuts, so consider increasing the waste allowance yourself — BuildCalcWorks never changes it silently.

An angled layout has no single repeating row across the deck, so the estimate is area-based: the deck area divided by the effective row pitch gives approximate linear decking, which is then converted to stock boards. Results are labelled as an approximate angled-layout estimate, no row count is invented, and no extra waste is added silently — diagonal layouts do create more cuts and offcuts, so decide your own allowance.

Picture-frame layouts may change field-board cuts. The material result is a planning estimate.

Border length and border boards are estimated separately, with their own waste allowance, so the field-board allowance is never applied twice. A border also changes the length of the field boards behind it, which is why the field figure stays a material-planning estimate rather than an exact cut list.

Fasteners are estimated from the board rows crossing your joists: rows × joists × fasteners per intersection. Enter the joist count you already have, or the joist spacing, in which case the shared joist engine works out the count.

Fastening requirements vary by decking manufacturer, board profile and installation system. Use the product's current installation instructions when available.

Price the decking one way at a time: per stock board, per linear foot or meter, or per unit area. A per-area price may already include packaging or extra material, so applying the waste allowance to it is an explicit, off-by-default choice and never happens twice.
