Deck joists

Layout entered as

Deck length and width give the area, the joist length and the dimension divided by spacing.

Joist direction

Joists run along the deck width, so the deck length is divided by the spacing.

Enter the maximum on-center spacing specified for your project by approved plans, applicable span tables, the decking manufacturer, applicable codes or qualified professional guidance.

Convenience values only — they are not recommended, approved or code-compliant spacings.

Available lumber lengths vary by supplier and product — not every product is sold in every length.

Your own allowance for cuts, defects and layout changes — not a universal requirement.

Joists are divided across the deck length. Quantity and layout estimate only. This calculator does not determine joist size, allowable span, structural spacing, load capacity, connection requirements or code compliance.

Deck joist estimate

How many deck joists?

Enter the deck dimensions, choose the joist direction and enter the maximum on-center spacing specified for your project, then select Calculate.

Quantity and layout estimate only. This calculator does not determine joist size, allowable span, structural spacing, load capacity, connection requirements or code compliance.

How Many Deck Joists Do I Need?

If joists must not exceed a maximum on-center spacing that your project specifies, the quantity comes from two steps:

Spaces = ceil(Deck Width ÷ Maximum Spacing)

Joists = Spaces + 1

For a 20 ft dimension at a maximum of 16 in on center: 240 in ÷ 16 = 15 spaces, so 16 joists. The calculator also shows the resulting average spacing, which is never greater than the maximum you entered.

Why Is There One More Joist Than Spaces?

Spacing is measured between joist centerlines, so each space sits between two joist lines. A layout with 15 spaces needs 16 joists — one at each outer boundary plus the lines in between.

Spacing is measured between joist centerlines, so a layout with 15 spaces has 16 joist lines: Spaces = ceil(Dimension ÷ Maximum Spacing), then Joists = Spaces + 1. Using ceil(width ÷ spacing) on its own would undercount the layout by one joist.

What Does “On Center” Mean?

On-center spacing measures from the centerline of one joist to the centerline of the next, not from face to face.

BuildCalcWorks uses the maximum spacing you enter to work out how many joist spaces fit across the deck, then adds the final boundary joist. No structural guidance is provided here.

How Joist Direction Affects Quantity

Changing the joist direction changes the joist length, the dimension being divided by the spacing, the joist quantity and the total linear lumber — even though the deck area stays identical.

On a 20 ft × 12 ft deck at a maximum of 16 in on center: joists running along the 12 ft width divide the 20 ft dimension into 15 spaces (16 joists, each about 12 ft). Turn them to run along the 20 ft length and the 12 ft dimension divides into 9 spaces (10 joists, each about 20 ft).

Joist Length vs. Allowable Span

Joist length is geometry. Allowable joist span is structural design.

This calculator can tell you approximately how long each joist is. It cannot tell you whether a 2×6, 2×8, 2×10 or any other member can safely span that length. Joist length is geometry. Allowable joist span is structural design that depends on lumber species, grade, member size, spacing, loads, support arrangement and applicable requirements.

What Joist Spacing Should I Use?

BuildCalcWorks does not select the spacing. Enter the maximum on-center spacing specified for your project by approved plans, applicable span tables, the decking manufacturer, applicable codes or qualified professional guidance.

The 12 in, 16 in and 24 in buttons are convenience values for fast entry — they are not recommended, approved or code-compliant spacings. Once you enter a spacing, the calculator determines the quantity from it.

Composite Decking and Support Spacing

Composite decking may have product-specific support-spacing requirements, and some products list different requirements for angled installations. Follow the manufacturer's current instructions rather than a general rule.

Deck Joist Blocking

Blocking may be used in deck framing depending on the design. BuildCalcWorks estimates material from the number of blocking rows you specify: pieces ≈ rows × joist spaces for simple continuous blocking between adjacent joists.

Material estimate from the blocking rows you specify. BuildCalcWorks does not determine whether blocking is required, where it is structurally required, or how it is attached.

Approximate bay width only — joist spacing varies slightly in the field. Verify field measurements before cutting. An approximate bay width is shown only when you enter an actual joist thickness.

Rim / Band Boards

The optional rim-board section estimates linear material along the deck edges you select, then converts it to stock boards with its own waste allowance.

Linear rim / band board material along the edges you select. Ledger arrangements and connection requirements are not determined here.

Joist Hangers

Hangers are optional and counted either as one per joist or as a custom quantity you enter.

Hanger quantity from your own choice of one per joist or a custom count. BuildCalcWorks does not determine whether hangers are required. Structural fasteners and connectors are not estimated automatically — you can add a connector allowance as your own quantity or cost line.

Joist Stock Length

If the required geometric joist length exceeds the selected stock lumber length, BuildCalcWorks flags it rather than inventing a splice.

Selected stock length is shorter than the calculated joist length. Structural splice and support design is outside this calculator, so no splice is assumed. Enter a longer stock length, or use the total linear-material estimate only.

Joist Material Cost

Joists can be priced per stock piece or per linear foot / meter — one method at a time. Optional rim board, blocking, hanger and connector costs can be added.

Joist / framing materials only. Decking boards, beams, posts, footings, railing, labor and permits are not included.

Need Deck Boards, Posts and Footings Too?

The full Decking Calculator adds deck boards, beams, posts, footings and concrete to the same shared joist layout.
